Sarah Graduates from Wheaton Grad School and Our First Sabbatical

The following was written by our daughter Sarah:

I have been privileged to share in the abiding joys and deep sorrows of students in the residence halls of Wheaton College these past two years. Working toward my M.A. in Christian Formation and Ministry, I focused in on discipling undergraduate RAs, writing my thesis work on “RAs and Rest: The Role of Sabbath Rest,” and providing support for students outside of the classroom through different student development programs. Jake and I both have found a “home” within Wheaton’s community and we are thrilled that I will be transitioning into working full time as an assistant to Wheaton’s Chaplain. I will be able to continue mentoring students, all while gaining valuable experience in teaching and program development. We invite you into the excitement of this time and humbly ask you join us in praying for our transition!

Our First Sabbatical

As full time missionary staff with Cru/Athletes in Action we are allowed to take a 30-day sabbatical once every four years.   This is going to be my first ever, even though I have been on staff for 37 years.  Part of the reason is that I was not encouraged to, and partially due to the demands of our family life and ministry.  Being in charge of the AIA ministry at Xavier University, and being the Operational Director of the Puerto Rico Project has hindered me from a lot of “self care”.  With some strong encouragement from Susie and the kids, I am taking the time this summer to enter into a time of reflection and rest, and growing in my personal relationship with Christ.  I am also making changes in my weekly schedule to intentionally insert rhythms of sabbath rest.  This is one of the Ten Commandments I have glossed over without guilt, in fact, I would feel guilty when I did rest.
